Tottenham’s Rodrigo Bentancur charged by FA over alleged racist remark | Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur has been charged by the Football Association with alleged misconduct over a comment he made about teammate Son Heung-min.

In June, the Uruguay international was asked by the presenter of the Canal 10 show for a Spurs player’s shirt, to which he replied: “Sonny’s? It could be Sonny’s nephew, because they all look the same.”

Anti-discrimination organisation Kick It Out said it had received a “significant number” of complaints. Bentancur apologised to the South Korean international and Spurs captain, saying his team-mate had “made a mistake”.

A statement from the FA said: “Rodrigo Bentancur has been charged with an alleged breach of FA rule E3 for misconduct in relation to a media interview. It is alleged that the Tottenham midfielder breached FA rule E3.1 by behaving in an improper manner and/or using abusive and/or swearing language and/or bringing the game into disrepute.

“It is further alleged that this constitutes an ‘aggravated offence’ as defined in FA Rule E3.2 as it contained a reference, either express or implied, to nationality and/or racial and/or ethnic origin. Rodrigo Bentancur has until Thursday 19 September 2024 to respond to this charge.”
