Tottenham’s Ange Postecoglou provides update on Djed Spence’s future

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has confirmed that Djed Spence will not leave the north London club this summer, with the full-back fitting in “really well” with the Australian coach’s squad.

It was reported this week that former Celtic boss Spence has already made it known that he wants the defender to stay and be part of his Spurs squad for next season after impressing with the right-back during pre-season.

The defender’s commitment and ability in both training and games has impressed Tottenham’s coaches this summer and as a result Postecoglou has plans for the 24-year-old, reports football.london.

The Spurs manager has now publicly confirmed this by admitting that Tottenham need Spence for the new season as the Premier League club will be playing a lot of football upon their return to Europe.

“He has had a good preparation and he has trained very well. He seems to fit in very well with the group,” Postecoglou said of the defender via Fabrizio Romano.

“He gives us some good options for the season in which we will have more challenges with European football.”

Djed Spence will not leave Tottenham this summer

The 2024/25 season is very important for Djed Spence’s career

Spence has struggled to get playing time at Tottenham since joining the club from Middlesbrough two summers ago, with much of that time spent on loan at Rennes, Leeds and Genoa.

The 2024/25 season could be the one the defender has been waiting for in North London, as Postecoglou is keen to give the defender the chance to prove himself.

The 24-year-old can play in both full-back roles, which will help the Englishman when it comes to minutes on the pitch during the campaign. The defender is unlikely to outshine Pedro Porro or Destiny Udogie to start at Spurs, but he can look to make it difficult for Postcoglou to sideline him on a week-to-week basis.
