Ange Postecoglou vented his frustration after Tottenham were left without a win at Newcastle despite dominating at St James’ Park.

“Yeah, we should have gotten something out of the game, obviously,” said the Australian. “It’s very similar to our first away game (at Leicester), where we were largely in control. We just had to finish it off and we didn’t.

‘The second goal was disappointing. We switched off, but it should have been over by then.

“So it’s unfortunately another painful one, where we don’t get the reward for our play. But it’s three strong performances from our first three games. The results don’t reflect that.”

Tottenham Hotspur have four points from the international break but Postecoglou insisted the rewards would come as arch-rivals Arsenal are next up for the match on September 15.

“The positive thing is that our football is good and has been in the last three games. We just need to get our reward,” the Spurs manager added. “If we keep playing like this I’m sure we will get it.”

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe insisted his team still has room for improvement despite their unbeaten start to the season.

“It was a tough game, especially the second half,” he said. “But it was a great response to find a way to win the game, so those are great signs, but we know that in the long run we have to improve our performance.

“We are not playing as we would like — we do not have enough control and composure — but we are showing our defensive qualities. On the ball, we still have a lot of work to do.”

And Howe admitted he was relieved that a “challenging” transfer window was over, with the club failing to strengthen their squad despite being linked with several high-profile players. “This transfer window has been tough for us,” he said.

“But it gives us stability now that a lot of the off-field stuff is gone, so we can focus on the field and the players that matter and get better as the season goes on.”
