Tim Burton doubts Beetlejuice 3 will ever happen, saying ‘I’ll live to be about 100’ based on current time frame

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, also known as Beetlejuice 2, hits theaters next week, but don’t expect director Tim Burton to return for Beetlejuice 3, if that ever happens.

The 66-year-old filmmaker discussed a possible third film in his Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder-led horror-comedy series when he spoke to The Hollywood Reporter. Time will tell if the sequel will be a success, but Burton isn’t optimistic that he’ll be involved if fans show interest in another film. He notes that the original Beetlejuice premiered in 1988, and the sequel came out a whopping 36 years later.

“Well, if (the same) time frame continues, I’ll be about 100,” Burton said when asked about a possible return. “So maybe. I doubt it.”

Tim Burton doesn’t expect Beetlejuice 3 to be released anytime soon.

Even if Beetlejuice 3 does become a reality in the near future, it doesn’t sound like Burton will be looking for a directing spot. When asked why he chose to return for Beetlejuice 2, the director said he liked the idea of exploring Ryder’s Lydia Deetz character further.

“As you get older, you start to think about what’s happening in life,” Burton continued. “(She) starts out as a cool teenager. Relationships… Do you have kids? What are they like? What do you like? How do you change? These are all things that I know and experience. So it felt better to make this now, rather than in, like, 1989.”

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice hits theaters September 6, bringing back classic characters and a revived cast that includes newcomers Jenna Ortega, Willem Dafoe, Justin Theroux, and Monica Bellucci. We called the long-awaited sequel “charming (if weightless)” in our 7/10 ratingand added: “The story is deliberately bereft of dramatic gravity, but this makes way for the wacky, imaginative practical effects of Burton’s early days, resulting in a small-scale sequel that doesn’t take itself too seriously (because it doesn’t have to).”

Don’t expect Burton to play a pivotal role in Beetlejuice 3, if it ever comes out, but we’ll know more about the chances after Beetlejuice Beetlejuice comes out.
