Manchester United legend Gary Neville has made it clear he would not be convinced by Gareth Southgate as a potential replacement for Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford.

Southgate’s name continues to emerge as a possible option to take over at Man Utd if they decide to make a move for Ten Hag, who is undoubtedly struggling for the Red Devils at the moment despite now being in his third season is in charge and seen many new additions to work with.

Neville appreciates that Southgate has turned things around for himself as England manager, which he also came in with plenty of skepticism, but he certainly feels he will face similar hostility from United fans.

Even if Southgate could do a good job with England, United could be a much bigger challenge because expectations are so high. next MUFC manager.

Speaking on the It’s Called Soccer podcast, Neville was asked about the Southgate and United job and said: “I said last season that I never saw Gareth as a match for Manchester United, or Manchester United as a match for Gareth.

“I never saw it as something that the club would do, I never saw it as something that Manchester United would do. The only connection I see is that (sporting director) Dan Ashworth has worked with Gareth and Gareth has made it very has done well for England.

“The Manchester United fans are a group of people with feelings, who have a spirit, and I don’t think they are connected to this idea anymore. Gareth could do exactly what he did with England if he came in in the next few months or a year or whenever and completely change people’s mindset and change the dynamic around the decision.

“He would come in – not unusual for him because he didn’t come to the job in England with a lot of love – he would come to Manchester United with scepticism, there’s no doubt about it, from Manchester United fans.

‘He would know that; Gareth has already been there, he would know this isn’t the most exciting event for Manchester United fans to watch.”
