There will be no celebration, says the new cycling time trial champion after a disciplinary hearing upheld his ride

The winner of the 2024 National Cycling Time Trial Championships is George Fox, it has been confirmed - seven weeks after the race was originally held.But the wait and commentary surrounding his ride have taken their toll, Fox says, and it's not something he wants to do.Fox beat Alex Dowsett by 41 seconds at the 36km event in April, but the result was left up in the air after a fellow rider complained about his position and his machine, which uses an Argon 18 E119 triathlon frame.The 30-year-old Midlands rider was finally vindicated yesterday at a disciplinary hearing at the Cycling Time Trials, where he successfully defended himself on seven separate counts to finally call himself champion. But Fox's ride and his bike – which is super aero and, he admits, pushes the boundaries of the loosely written rules – have proven divisive, with many shots fired from both sides on social media.“The last six, seven weeks have taken their toll,” Fox told Cycling Weekly. "To be honest, I don't really feel like celebrating that. Because it feels a little weird to celebrate something that has caused you a lot of anxiety, stress and unhappiness."Yesterday it was 'business as usual' after the hearing. In fact, it's something he'd like to see, with rules that are less open to interpretation, making riders less open to the kind of complaints Fox experienced."It's almost inevitable that I'm anticipating rule changes for next year, which I think is a good thing. So for me it needs refinement or just a complete change," he said. "It's hard because the tighter you make it, the greater the risk that people won't want to get involved. It's not easy to achieve."This isn't the first time Fox's bike has divided opinion. It also happened when he used an earlier version of the Argon 18 frame to set a new 16-mile road bike record last year.The racing bike category – introduced last year as a standard category at every open event – has proven popular for cycling time trials, which dominate the sport in Britain, and a key weapon in trying to stem the decline in race numbers to call.Yesterday, CTT also introduced Tribes, which allows riders to ride their local races as part of a national competition.But Fox, after its setup is officially approved for use, will continue to use it.“I'm excited to start racing it again,” he says, “because a lot of hard work and effort has gone into it.
