There is a way to play Cult Of The Lamb with online co-op

Of everything that is happening Cult of the Lamb Unholy Alliance update, the centerpiece is undoubtedly the new co-op mode. It sees two players take control of the eponymous lamb and a wily goat to embark on crusades and manage the cult together. One arguable downside is that it’s local play only, but those playing on Steam can bypass this restriction.

That workaround requires you and your friend to play together via the platform’s Remote Play feature. It’s easy to set up, though there are a few caveats that both seasoned users and newcomers to the feature may be unfamiliar with. Here’s what you need to know to start a cult with your friends from afar.

How does Steam Remote Play work?

Remote Play is a feature on Steam that allows you to stream your games from your PC to other devices. While the obvious use cases are streaming to your mobile devices or VR headsets, it’s also possible to stream to your friends.

The added benefit of the latter is that you can have them interact with their own inputs. This means you can effectively host a local co-op game with a friend online, and their controller will be recognized as if it were a second player sitting next to you. Even better, because it’s more like streaming than an actual online session, your friend doesn’t even need to own the game! Anyone with a Steam account can be invited to join you.

You’ll want to start the game first and confirm that you’re set as Online and not Away. You can’t get this to work if you’re offline, and you also can’t invite anyone to Remote Play if you’re Invisible. Once you are online and launch the game, go to the Steam Overlay (shift+tab) and click the Remote Play Together button.

This will open an overlay box where you can send invitations, customize what inputs they have access to, and change what quality to prioritize for the stream. Click the ‘Invite a Friend’ button to open your friends list and choose which friends you want to go on a cult adventure with. Once they accept your offer, they will be able to view and interact with your stream through their Steam application.

The rest works the same as a typical local co-op session. Make sure you’re loaded into your save file, then pause the game and select Add Co-Op Player. This isn’t accessible during cutscenes or the new game tutorial section, but it is available at almost any other time. Both players can move their inputs around to determine who controls which character. Hit the Summon the Goat button to bring in the second player and begin the co-op fun. Things are crazier when two people are playing, but both will benefit from following the same gameplay tips.

Solutions for Cult of the Lamb Remote Play

While this workaround is supported by the developers as a way for PC users to play online with each other, it’s not perfect. It’s essentially streaming a local co-op game, and Remote Play itself can have its share of issues and kinks. Here are a few tips to make the experience smoother:

  • Remote Play only supports one keyboard and mouse input, so the second player must use a controller. If your friend doesn’t have one, the best option is to look into a virtual controller setup.
  • While this avoids some of the issues in traditional online gaming, stable internet connections are still vital here. Just because everything is running smoothly on the host side, doesn’t mean the invited player will have the same experience. Make sure everyone has sufficient connections to host and watch a stream.
  • Changing the quality in the Steam Remote Play settings can also make the experience more enjoyable. The host can switch between Automatic, Balanced, Beautiful and Fast Quality. Try them all to see what works best for everyone.
  • In line with the above, I recommend that the host familiarize themselves with the Remote Play settings in general. Although only one keyboard and mouse input is recognized, all players can share control over it. If strange input problems occur, the host may need to restrict keyboard and mouse access to itself.

You should now be better prepared to influence the unbelievers Cult of the Lamb with a friend, whether they’re sitting next to you or joining in from further away. Just remember that this is a Steam-exclusive feature. You’re out of luck if you’re playing on console or bought the game through GOG. Adding proper online co-op would be a major undertaking and probably won’t be added in the future, but for now this is a fairly accessible alternative if you and your friends are playing together on Steam.
