The author behind A song of fire and ice is busy finishing the last two parts in that acclaimed fantasy series, but not so busy that he doesn’t have time to tease the audience about all those new Game of Thrones spin-offs currently in production for TV. According to George R. R. Martin, there are seven in the works, including several animated series, some of which have not even been officially announced yet.

House of the Dragon has completed its second season last night, and HBO wasted no time preparing fans for the next Game of Thrones series. It’s called A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and is an adaptation of Martin’s Stories of Dunk and Egga series of novellas following the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall and King Aegon V Targaryen, 90 years before the events of the novels. But this second spin-off is far from the only one.

Martin recently attended a workshop for fantasy writers in Oxford with Are dark materials writer Phillip Pullman was the mind behind the Game of Thrones franchise reportedly told attendees that there are currently seven shows in development (via Forbes). We’ve heard plenty of rumors about projects in the past, many of which were eventually scrapped or replaced with other pitches, but the added twist here is that Martin suggested that four of these spinoffs are currently planned as animated series. Here’s where things seem to stand based on that:

  • Aegon the Conqueror (live-action)
  • Ten Thousand Ships (live action)
  • Mystery Live-Action 1
  • The Golden Empire (animated)
  • Sea Serpent (animated)
  • Mystery Animated 1
  • Mystery Animated 2

Ten thousand shipsa prequel set a millennium earlier Game of Throneswas thought to have been postponed, but in June Martin confirmed that it still moving forward. The backstory of Corlys Velaryon, introduced in House of the Dragonwill be explored in the animated series Sea serpent. While it was once considered for a live-action show, Martin later said it made more sense budgetarily to have the seafarer story told through animation.

Other projects, like a direct sequel with Kit Harington returning as Jon Snow, were canceled early on, so who knows what other ideas have been floating around in the meantime? It’s not entirely clear how involved Martin is in all of these spinoffs, and how much time and energy they may or may not take up over finishing the original book series. I’m sure brainstorming all of these other ideas is a lot more fun.

And with House of the Dragon finding his way in season 2it looks like HBO is going to be pushing these in-development pitches with more enthusiasm than ever. Between that and Old Ring once again one of the best-selling games of the year, it turns out to be George RR Martin’s summer after all.
