The world’s largest hockey stick will be cut into millions of small sticks

The largest hockey stick in the world, which was on Vancouver Island, is disappearing.

The 200-foot-long, 61,000-pound hockey stick, made from Douglas fir for Expo 86, holds the 2008 Guinness World Record for the largest in the world.

After a months-long bidding process, the Cowichan Valley Regional District (CVRD) has unveiled its plans for the massive, old hockey stick that has stood at the local ice rink for 35 years.

β€œThe structure was originally built for Expo 1986 in Vancouver, then brought to the island and attached to the Cowichan Community Center building in 1988. For the past 35 years, it has been a prominent landmark of the Cowichan region,” the district said Thursday in a news release.

Although repairs dating back to 2000 extended the hockey stick’s lifespan, the hockey stick’s rotting Douglas fir structure now poses a risk to public safety.

CVRD says ownership of the hockey stick has been transferred to Maxwell’s Auto Center in Shawnigan Lake, which will turn it into collectibles.

The company plans to make millions of small sticks from the giant hockey stick and sell them to the public as collectibles. These miniatures are used for fundraising campaigns for sports teams and charities.

No details have been provided on the exact date the stick was removed. However, once it is taken down, the title of “largest in the world” will go to Lockport, Illinois.

The American city plans to build an arena with a hockey stick measuring over 250 feet long, surpassing the current record holder.
