The Sutter legacy lives on in Calgary!

Last week, AHL veteran Brett Sutter, son of former NHL coach Darryl Sutter, announced his retirement from professional hockey after 17 seasons split between the AHL and NHL.

The 37-year-old was captain of the Calgary Wranglers, the AHL affiliate of the Calgary Flames, last season, where he scored eight goals and 10 points in 46 games. He will now move directly to an assistant coaching position with the Wranglers.

From the official announcement of Sutter’s retirement:

“After 17 seasons as a player, I am very proud and excited to be leaving the game and have the opportunity to step into this role within the Flames organization right away,” said Sutter. “Saying goodbye to playing is not easy, the game has treated my family and I so well for so long, but the opportunity to stay with the organization that my family loves makes this transition easier. I am grateful to the Flames for this opportunity.”

“I am excited to learn and grow quickly in this new role in professional hockey,” Sutter continued. “I look forward to the transition as I continue to provide leadership in a coaching role and ultimately help our prospects achieve their goal of playing with the Calgary Flames. I want to thank everyone who has been a part of my playing journey, especially my family and so many great teammates and friends.”

The Viking, Alberta native has two goals and 10 points in 60 NHL games split between the Flames, Carolina Hurricanes and Minnesota Wild. His longest stint in the AHL was with the Ontario Reign, the AHL affiliate of the Los Angeles Kings, from 2015-2022.
