“The Real Deal” – Wilson Golf’s Staff Model RB Utility – GolfWRX

When Wilson officially released their brand new Wilson Staff Model RB Utility last month, we (along with four forum members) happened to visit the Wilson team to learn about and test their latest products. When news of the RB Utility broke, GolfWRXers immediately took our members on a journey to learn all about Wilson’s latest utility iron.

We spoke with Wilson’s product and R&D team, we tested it on site, and our members have been testing it at home ever since. Now, we’re excited to share everything you need to know about the Wilson Staff Model RB Utility, just in case you’re looking to fill that spot in your bag.

About the Wilson Staff Model RB Utility

This hybrid-alternative club is designed to give golfers a versatile option in the gap between fairway woods and long irons. Wilson offers the better-player-focused Staff Model RB utility in three loft offerings (18, 21, and 24 degrees). Based on input from Wilson Advisory Staff members (including Padraig Harrington, who games the club), the RB is designed with a thin topline and clean look favored by better players. Engineers strategically distributed weight across the toe and sole of the club in this “mid-to-low” CG club for greater resistance to twist and improved forgiveness.

First Impressions of Pinehurst

knudson81: “The new RB Utility looks so good and I haven’t hit it yet but it sounds smooth and solid! I’ve seen guys hit it and was impressed with the flight as well. I’m definitely going to get a 4i version to try!”

Olson12: “I’ve been playing Srixon & Ping Utilities for a while now. I recently gave up the Crossover and went back to a 3 hybrid because the offset just wasn’t working for me. Since the club was only announced today, we only had the standard HZRDUS Black shaft in both the 3 and 4 iron. I hit the 3 and realized it’s been a long time since I’ve hit a long iron. Took me a few shots, but I started to find my groove. Minimal offset, satin finish, and a nice topline. This thing is going to compete with the big boys. Damn, @TLUBulldogGolf hit 150 mph ball speed off the tee.”

“This thing is going to compete with the big boys.”

TM golfer: “The utility iron is a rocket launcher. Again, I wasn’t swinging very well at this point, but I got a few out so I could see that it’s a real winner. I’m looking forward to putting a 3/4 in the bag, and I have no doubt one of these will kick my old Srixon ass.”

More testing…

The Wilson team was able to turn almost the entire bag that our members could fit in overnight. However, the RB Utility had to be shipped shortly after the trip. Our members have had them for a few weeks now and are doing their due diligence on Wilson’s newest club. AJ, who goes by TLUBulldogGolf on the forums, is particularly taken with the RB Utility and it seemed like a match made in heaven since he first hit it. AJ carries a +2 handicap and has also been fitted for the Wilson Staff Model Blades.

TLUBulldogGolf: “The usability is real, just seems to want to go straight. Slightly longer heel to toe than my T200, and it just feels easy.”

“The utility surprised me, I knew it was good from my last session on the course but it seems to be lower despite having more loft than my T200. I hit it over the green from 240 on a par 5 which surprised me. The standard HZRDUS 4G sticks with me and seems to be a good match for my irons.”

Olson12: “I started using the DI when I got back from my trip and it really is. I really loved my 3 hybrid but the DI is just so much more versatile.”

TM golfer: “I’m going to give an update on the mid-range session because this utility is really good. The first swing I made I hit it quite toe-first and it flew straight as an arrow. Off the tee it’s a more penetrating flight than my Srixon but still has good height. As @TLUBulldogGolf said, it really wants to go straight. Definitely a winner. I still don’t know what loft I need but one of these is definitely going in my bag.”

“I fully expect the irons, wedges and a utility to end up in the bag at this point.”
