The Phillies’ injured list continues to grow as Sosa goes to a 10-day IL

The Phillies’ injured list continues to grow as Sosa goes to a 10-day IL originally appeared on NBC Sports Philadelphia

MIAMI – The Phillies’ injured list grew longer on Sunday.

Infielder Edmundo Sosa was placed on the 10-day injured list for the final game of the series against the Marlins. “As he was getting ready to go in the cage (Saturday) he felt something in his back,” manager Rob Thomson said. “Then he went to hit some and felt it. And felt it again this morning.”

The Phillies used that roster spot to add right-handed pitcher Seth Johnson, who will make his major league debut at Depot Park.

Third baseman Alec Bohm (hand) and outfielder Austin Hayes (kidney infection) have been placed on the IL for this series. Additionally, catcher JT Realmuto has sat out the last two games after fouling a pitch off his knee on Friday night.

Realmuto said Sunday that the swelling and pain have improved dramatically. Thomson indicated he could be back in a day or two.

With Bryce Harper playing with wrist and elbow soreness, the Phillies had a shuffled lineup Sunday. Harper was the designated hitter, with Kody Clemens at first base in his place and regular DH Kyle Schwarber in left. Weston Wilson was at third base.

NEXT: The Phillies open a homestand Monday with a three-game series against the Rays. Tampa Bay has not yet named its starter for Monday, but will face LHP Cristopher Sanchez (10-9, 4.45) in the opener. It will be RHP Taj Bradley (6-10, 4.40) against LHP Ranger Suarez (12-6, 2.90) on Tuesday and RHP Shane Baz (2-3, 3.27) against RHP Zack Wheeler (14-6, 2.59) on Wednesday. All games start at 6:40 p.m.
