The open potential endings are in the “double digits,” the developer confirms

There will be countless different endings to discover when Avowed comes out next year.

During Gamescom, game director Carrie Patel was asked by IGN how many possible endings Obsidian’s fantasy RPG will have. “Ooh, that’s really hard to say,” Patel replied, before adding, “I can tell you that our ending slides are in the double digits, and you can end up with a lot of different combinations of them.”

Patel continues: “This is an Obsidian game, so the ending of the game is really the sum of your choices in the game, in many different pieces of content, depending on what you encountered and what you did when you found it.”

The Avowed director further explained that the team designed the game and its gameplay in such a way that players have many different options for how to approach things, such as in regards to combat and their character.

“And in terms of the storyline, there are really a lot of choices to make, about where your true loyalties lie, who you’re loyal to in the endgame,” Patel continued. “We’re really excited to see players explore those possibilities and just build their own story.”

Later in the conversation, the developer said that there won’t really be a canonical ending, as it’s the player’s “experience.”

But despite this freedom, you can’t just go around slaughtering everyone. Patal said the team opted against the “kill everyone” approach because while that can be a chaotic and fun way to play, Obsidian felt it could “make the game[it]wanted without that.”

“I’m more intrigued than I was, certainly, now that I’m a novice to the playstyle and story,” he wrote in Eurogamer’s Avowed preview. “If you’re looking for a new Obsidian hit… Avowed is one to watch.”
