The final major of the year gets underway with the 152nd Open Championship. The tournament is being held at Royal Troon in Scotland, eight years after a memorable final round duel between Henrik Stenson and Phil Mickelson captured the excitement of the crowd when it was last held there.

Brian Harman returns as reigning champion after a surprisingly convincing six-stroke victory at Royal Liverpool last year. The American now has the chance to become the first player since Padraig Harrington to win back-to-back editions of The Open.

World No. 1 and two-time Masters champion Scottie Scheffler is the favourite for the tournament, playing his first match since winning the Travelers Championship last month and chasing a seventh victory in 11 starts. Rory McIlroy leads Britain’s hopes after his heartbreaking US Open and insists he is ‘closer than ever’ to a fifth major title.

The last six men’s majors have all been won by Americans, including PGA Championship winner Xander Schauffele and US Open winner Bryson DeChambeau.

US Open champion Bryson DeChambeau starts his round with a solid drive off the first tee. He takes an iron and runs past the rough on the left, but it looks like a good lie.

Can DeChambeau replicate his earlier form and compete in these windy links conditions this week? He has started well.

That’s insanely good from Robert MacIntyre. He’s 56 feet out from the first hole and rolls his putt over the undulating green to make the simplest of tap-ins for par.

On the eighth hole, Justin Rose hits his tee shot to the right side of the green and watches the ball land in the nearest deep bunker.

That’s going to be a tough one to save par. Rose wasn’t happy with something in the crowd and looks furious after his tee shot goes awry.

Finally! Justin Rose gets one to drop and moves to two under to join that group, just one stroke behind the leader. He is now through seven and seems to have adapted well to the conditions.

After dropping a strike in the seventh inning, Nicolai Hojgaard birdied the eighth inning and got the strike right back.

Change on the scoreboard.

Younghan Song got into trouble with an unpredictable drive on the ninth that hooked him into the rough on the left. He couldn’t save the hole and took his medicine with a dropped shot to get back to three under.

Just behind him, Adam Scott, who challenged for victory at the Scottish Open last week, hits a nice birdie on the eighth. He’s been consistent, two birdies, six pars so far.

This is a group worth watching. There will be a few spectators following the course, as did Jon Rahm, Tommy Fleetwood and Scottish Open winner Robert MacIntyre this morning.

Those three are now on the first tee.

Top quality from Alex Noren who gets close to the hole from the side of the green on hole 11 before tapping in the par putt to stay close to the top of the leaderboard.

Further down the pitch, Nicolai Hojgaard makes a mistake on the seventh, hitting a par putt around the hole and dropping a stroke after tapping for bogey.

Back on the first tee, the last group is golfing as a few raindrops can be seen on the television cameras.

Americans Tony Finau and Russell Henley both hit their drives down the fairway, while Frenchman Matthieu Pavon takes a driving iron from the bag and follows them down the first fairway.

Francesco Molinari plays with Rose and can read his partner’s earlier putt well. He hits his own attempt in the middle of the hole.

He joins the group with a score of two under par.
