The Nintendo Switch 2 release date rumor points to a later launch than expected

The Nintendo Switch 2 hasn’t even been officially announced yet (Nintendo has only confirmed that a Switch successor is in development), but we’re already hearing rumors that the highly anticipated next-generation console has been delayed.

For months, industry rumor mongers and leakers have been tipping the Nintendo Switch 2 for a spring 2025 launch, which would match the release date of the first Nintendo Switch. However, according to a new tip, the Switch 2 could now arrive much later than expected.

According to a poster on Famiboards under the name RandomlyRandom67 (and spotted by Comicbook.com), the Nintendo Switch 2 did not go into full production in August, as previous rumors claimed. The user also suggests that the Nintendo Switch 2 is still not in full production as of October 2024.

At first glance this may not seem like a big deal, but if Switch 2 isn’t in production, the likelihood of the console launching in the first quarter of 2025 is seriously doubtful. Producing enough units for launch would be a huge logistical challenge. Especially as previous reports have suggested that Nintendo is keen to ensure there is sufficient supply of the Switch 2 to meet expected launch demand. Nintendo apparently wants to avoid a restocking situation for the PS5.

Offering a glimmer of hope, the Famiboards user notes that component shipments are increasing, which could be an indication that Switch 2 will soon enter full production. However, if this report is true, the Nintendo Switch 2 release date could land in the second half of 2025. It could even be a sign that Nintendo is targeting a holiday release, similar to the PS5 Pro this winter.

Until now, the prevailing theory has been that Nintendo wants to emulate the launch strategy it followed with the current Nintendo Switch. That would mean an official announcement this month (which itself seems increasingly unlikely) before a global release in early March. However, this new rumor casts doubt on this event.

Of course, all of the above should be taken with a grain of salt. After all, almost anyone can create an account on a message board and spread false information. So while the Famiboards user may turn out to be a legitimate leaker, we’ll have to file this rumor as unverified at this stage.

This is far from the first (rather dubious) Nintendo Switch 2 rumor to hit the internet in recent weeks. Previous rumors claimed that the Switch 2 is “ready to use” and another leak may have given us a closer look the design and specifications of the console. Furthermore, several industry analysts have recently claimed that Nintendo Switch 2 will be released in March 2025.
