The iPhone 17 Pro Max is rumored to have a smaller dynamic island again due to the Face ID change

The high-end iPhone 17 Pro Max launching next year will feature a smaller Dynamic Island, according to technology analyst Jeff Pu, who has a pretty good track record with Apple rumors. This reiterates information he first shared in May.

iPhone 17 Pro Max Feature with smaller notch
In a research note with investment bank Haitong International earlier this month, obtained by MacRumorsPu said the iPhone 17 Pro Max will use a “metal lens” for Face ID, resulting in a “much narrower” Dynamic Island on the device. He doesn’t expect this change to apply to the smaller iPhone 17 Pro, or other iPhone 17 models.

While a traditional iPhone camera has curved lenses that direct light to the image sensor, a metal lens is a thin and flat lens with microscopic patterns etched on it that can focus light more precisely. In his research note this month, Pu didn’t provide specific details on how Apple plans to use a metal for the Face ID system, nor did he explain how the change would result in a narrower Dynamic Island.

Apple introduced Dynamic Island in 2022 on the iPhone 14 Pro models and is also available on all iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 models.

Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 17 series in September next year, and more details about these metals could emerge in the coming months.
