Andrew Flintoff’s first game as head coach of the Northern Superchargers ended in defeat. On Friday, they lost at home to the Trent Rockets by 47 runs.

The Rockets scored 185-5 in their innings after batting first at Headingley, with Tom Banton leading the way after 66 from 38 balls, including nine fours and one six.

Despite a good all-round performance from Ben Dwarshuis, former England captain Flintoff’s team struggled to get going in their reply. Three wickets from Chris Green, along with his cameo 25 with the bat, restricted them to 138-8 in their innings.

Northern Superchargers vs Trent Rockets

Trent Rockets 185-5 from 100 balls: Tom Banton (66 from 38 balls), Sam Hain (49 from 28 balls), Chris Green (25 from 7 balls), Ben Dwarshuis (2-28 from 20 balls), Matthew Potts (2-37 from 20 balls).

Northern Superchargers 138-8 from 100 balls: Ben Dwarshuis (40 from 20 balls), Ollie Robinson (25 from 17 balls), Chris Green (3-14 from 20 balls), Lewis Gregory (2-21 from 15 balls).

Banton and fellow opener Adam Lyth put on 44 runs for the first wicket before Dwarshuis dismissed the latter for 12. Alex Hales made just six before being caught by Adam Hose off Matthew Potts.

But Banton and Sam Hain helped the Rockets to a challenging 100-ball total with a stand of 65 for the third wicket, which was ended when Banton was caught by England seamer Potts (2-37).

Hain also fell one run short of his half-century after becoming the second victim of Australian sailor Dwarshuis. He finished with figures of 2-28 from his 20 balls, but Green – making his only appearance in The Hundred – hit 25 from just seven balls at the end of the innings.

The Superchargers cruised to victory with 186 runs and started reasonably well thanks to an opening stand of 41 runs between Ollie Robinson (25) and Graham Clark (17).

Trent Rockets’ Chris Green made a sensational diving catch to deny Northern Superchargers’ stand-in captain Matthew Short.

However, after Clark was bowled by Imad Wasim, wickets fell regularly, with seamer Lewis Gregory (2-21) and spinner Green (3-14) doing most of the damage.

A superb 40 from 20 balls, with two fours and three sixes, from number 8 Dwarshuis was a rare bright spot in the Superchargers’ innings, but ultimately the hosts fell well short of their target.
