The team’s withdrawal due to wet weather significantly reduced the chances of Welsh Fire and Northern Superchargers reaching the final rounds of the men’s competition The Hundred.

Their match, which started more than two hours later on Thursday due to rain in Cardiff, was reduced to 25 balls per team, the minimum requirement for a match.

After the Superchargers scored 26-5 from 25 balls, the Fires had to play the first two balls of their innings before rain came and the match was quickly called off.

The Superchargers struggled to score quick runs in their innings, with Matthew Short, Nicholas Pooran, Harry Brook and Ben Stokes failing to reach double figures, while Matt Henry and Haris Rauf took two wickets each.

With both teams now awarded a point, the Fire now sit two points adrift of the top three with just two group games remaining, while the Superchargers have moved up to third. The Superchargers could be caught up before they play Manchester Originals again on Sunday.

Earlier on Thursday, the women’s league match between the Fire and the Superchargers was called off without a ball being thrown.
