The debut of the World Games Series in Hong Kong paves the way for the city to host more multi-sport events

The debut of the World Games Series in Hong Kong on Friday will be a springboard for the city to host other large-scale, multi-sport events, observers say.

The organizing committee said it had sold or given away more than 13,000 tickets for the three-day sporting event and its carnival as of Wednesday. Wushu, cheerleading and roller sports competitions will be held.

The competitions, held on Saturday and Sunday, will see athletes compete for a chance to qualify for the 2025 World Games in Chengdu, in sports that were not included in the Olympics.

“In the future, we hope to organize more large-scale competitions, but Hong Kong should warm up,” said MP Vincent Cheng Wing-shun.

“When we organize these qualifying events, we warm ourselves up by ensuring that our support measures are properly implemented.”

Cheng, who is also vice-chairman of the Hong Kong Sports Institute, said he hoped the city could attract more competitions and qualifiers so it could gain more experience in organizing these events.
