The deadly shooting in Israel was a terrorist attack

One person was killed and four others were injured in a shooting near Ashdod, Israel, now considered a terrorist attack on Tuesday.

Authorities say an attacker opened fire on a police officer in the area before turning his weapons on civilians. The police officer died of his injuries while being transported to a nearby hospital. The attacker was killed by an armed civilian.

At least one of the injured civilians is said to be in fair condition. Volunteer EMTs were the first to respond to the scene and they made a public statement describing the situation.

“We provided initial treatment at the scene and performed CPR on a 30-year-old man in critical condition,” EMTs said. “We were also told that other first responders and a United Hatzalah ambulance team at two additional locations treated an individual in mild to moderate condition who had been transported to the hospital by United Hatzalah ambulance and a slightly injured man.”

Another local hospital, the Kaplan Medical Center, reported admitting a 37-year-old man who was injured in the incident, according to the Jerusalem Post.

The shooting comes a day later Israeli authorities announced that four Israeli Army (IDF) soldiers were killed and nearly 60 people injured in a drone attack on a military base in Binyamina, Israel. According to reports, the Lebanon-based militant group Hezbollah has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Sunday’s attack came on the same day the US said it would send a new air defense system to Israel to boost protection against missiles.

“The THAAD battery will strengthen Israel’s integrated air defense system. This action underscores the United States’ strong commitment to defending Israel, and to defending Americans in Israel, from further ballistic missile attacks by Iran. It’s part of broader adjustments the US military has made in recent months to support Israel’s defense and protect Americans from attacks from Iran and… Militias affiliated with Iran,” the Pentagon said in a statement.
