The Daily: Hurricanes working on signing Necas; Sprong got less

Sometimes the intense swirl of trade rumors simply ends in pointless commotion. Early in the offseason, Carolina Hurricanes restricted free agent Martin Necas was the hottest player on the trade market.

Based on the rumors, he was going anywhere but back to Carolina next season. Now, it’s clear that Carolina’s new general manager, Eric Tulsky, is doing everything he can to keep Necas. With an arbitration hearing looming, Necas has put on a full court push to get him to sign.

NHL.com’s Tom Gulitti has plenty of details on what’s happening with Necas.

“We’ve put everything on the table, from one year to eight years,” Tulsky told Gulitti. “So it’s a matter of figuring out if there’s something that makes sense for both sides.”

These are not the efforts of a team that wants to trade Necas. Talks continue.

“Of course both sides would prefer that to going to a hearing,” Tulsky said. “But arbitration creates a mechanism where if we can’t agree on a deal, a third party will settle the deal for us. So either way, it’s going to get settled.

Red Wings In case you missed it

Former Red Wings player Daniel Sprong signed with the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday, taking a pay cut of more than $1 million.

Now that Joe Veleno has signed, the Red Wings are left with only Moritz Seider, Lucas Raymond and Jonatan Berggren.

Veteran goalie Cam Talbot can help the Red Wings this season and in the future.
