Texas wide receiver Ryan Wingo has impressed his coaches and teammates with his maturity, humility and dedication to his craft.

Texas Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian had already mentioned the freshman wide receiver Ryan Wingo twice before being asked about him on Thursday. In discussing the wide receiver rotation, Sarkisian emphasized Wingo’s increased confidence following the reserves’ strong performance against Colorado State in the season opener. Sarkisian expressed his satisfaction with the depth and quality of his wide receiver group, stating that none of them seemed overwhelmed by the big moment.
When discussing the young players who performed well against the Rams, Ryan said Wing was mentioned alongside running back Jerrick Gibson and cornerback Wardell, who made a crucial interception to preserve the shutout. In response to a specific question about Wingo, Sarkisian emphasized his ability to consistently make plays, citing his two touchdowns in the Orange-White game and his team-high 70 receiving yards in his debut.

“I appreciate the humility, but I also appreciate the work ethic…”

“I think Ryan, even through the whole recruiting process and coming here, he had a real sense of maturity about him. He’s a worker, he loves football, he’s humble. He knows he’s not a finished product, but he still keeps working every day, and as he gradually grows and becomes more and more successful, he just keeps piling that on top of the work he’s already put in,” Sarkisian said.
“I appreciate the humility, but I also appreciate the work ethic, and I also appreciate the confidence that he has in himself to do the things that he does. And so he has a great attitude and he does his job the right way, not only on the field, but off the field as well.”

Ryan Wingo, a highly regarded five-star recruit, chose Texas over other top programs, including Missouri. Despite a slight drop in rankings, Wingo’s exceptional combination of size, speed and ability to make plays after the catch is evident on the field. In his debut, Wingo demonstrated his chemistry with quarterback Quinn Ewers, making a contested catch and gaining yards on a designed play.
During preseason camp, Sarkisian discussed the importance of wide receivers understanding which players naturally find the ball and which require targeted plays. Ryan Wingo has shown both of these skills, showcasing his running back-like skills and his ability to create separation and make catches. Sarkisian emphasized the depth of the wide receiver rotation, stating that they value quality over quantity. Wingo played a limited number of snaps against the Rams but made the most of his opportunities, averaging 8.75 yards per route run. Wingo’s impressive performance and potential suggest he could be a future star, and his contributions to the team are already clear.
