For the first time in almost ten years he took the step, but on Saturday night it was Terence Crawford who made it happen.

Crawford defeated WBA super welterweight champion Israil Madrimov via unanimous decision in a thrilling 12-round bout at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles on Saturday. That officially gave Crawford, who moved up to 154 pounds for the first time in his career, a fourth title in as many divisions.

“He had quick feet, he had good rhythm up top and he was strong,” Crawford said of Madrimov in the ring. “He waited to counter me, just like I waited to counter him … He fought a good fight.”

Crawford, who began his professional career in 2009 at super lightweight, was a heavy favorite going into Saturday night’s bout. Earlier in the evening, there was also a problem with his gloves, as one of them ripped at the seams. This came after he initially objected to Madrimov’s Grant Gloves, but later agreed to wear them. This delayed his warm-up somewhat.

The first few rounds were very slow as both guys seemed to be feeling each other out — though Crawford seemed to have a slight advantage early on as Madrimov held on. He even landed a couple of hard blows to the head in the third round and briefly sent Crawford to the mat at the end of the fifth round, though it was considered a trip and Crawford appeared relatively unaffected.

Crawford responded with a combination of headshots in the sixth round to regain the lead by the halfway point. As Madrimov appeared to close in the eighth and ninth rounds—he landed a massive blow to Crawford’s head in the ninth round, arguably his best of the night—Crawford responded successfully each time. Crawford then came out of the blocks strongly in the final round in an attempt to solidify his victory, which, while he couldn’t end it early, he did seal.

Crawford won the bout 115-113 on two scorecards and 116-112 on the third to claim the unanimous decision victory, which put him 41-0 and officially handed Madrimov the first loss of his career.

“He’s only had 11 fights, but he was tough,” Crawford said. “For me to fight a guy of his caliber in my first fight (at 154 pounds) says a lot about my team.”
