Teamsters President Sean O’Brien defended his union’s decision not to endorse presidential candidates Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Trump, telling an outraged Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) to focus on her work “instead of mine.”

CNN host Dana Bash spoke with O’Brien on Thursday and shared a video clip in which Ocasio-Cortez argues that he is biting the hand that feeds him and his organization.

“At the end of the day, we know that when the Teamsters are in trouble, who do they call when we need to make sure that the Teamsters’ pensions are saved, when we need to make sure that they get a fair chance at the bargaining table?”

“It was Sean O’Brien who asked the Democrats for help,” AOC argued.

Bash then asked O’Brien directly: “If Democrats are the ones who consistently not only support your legislative priorities but also pass them into law, why are you refuse to give (Harris) the really important grassroots support in a 50-50 race?”

O’Brien immediately responded by attempting to clear up AOC’s alleged inconsistencies.

“Well, I want to maybe clear up a couple of things that are inconsistent,” he said. “We didn’t call on the administration. We called on the administration to stay out of this.”

O’Brien further argued that in the Boston area where he grew up, “if two people disagree, (and) you have nothing to do with it, you just move on, so that statement is inconsistent.”

“Now she (AOC) needs to remember that there is a clear divide, particularly among Teamster members, between Democrats and Republicans, and instead of trying to pick a fight with union leaders who listened to their members and embraced the views of their members, maybe she should go to her district where it voted far Republican, far right Republican, and maybe figure out what the problem is,” O’Brien suggested. “If I have a problem in a workplace, and there’s criticism, I’m going to go right there and figure it out.”

“In our poll in New York, her district voted overwhelmingly Republican to support former President Trump, so she better focus on her job instead of mine,” he added.

The International Brotherhood of Teamsters faced widespread criticism Wednesday after announcing it would not endorse a presidential candidate. While many prominent Democratic leaders have responded by arguing that their policies are more pro-union, polls showed a majority of Teamster members favored Trump over Harris, 58 percent to 31 percent.

“Unfortunately, neither major candidate was able to make serious commitments to our union to ensure that the interests of working people always come before the interests of big business,” O’Brien said in a statement.

Like Ocasio-Cortez, other Democratic Party leaders were also unhappy.

Rep. Jim McGovern, D-Mass., who, like O’Brien, is from the Boston area, called former President Trump “the most anti-labor president we’ve ever had.” “Clearly these workers are misinformed or uninformed about Trump’s record on labor,” McGovern told the Washington Times“His loyalty is not to the working class.”

McGovern, the top Democrat on the House Rules Committee, said it’s clear Trump supports “rich people” more than the working class.

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) called the Teamsters’ decision “disappointing.”

“Donald Trump refused to support a Teamsters pension bill. It was Biden-Harris and Democrats who saved Teamsters pensions in the Butch Lewis Act of our American Rescue Plan — without a single Republican vote,” she said on X.
