Taylor Swift and Sabrina Carpenter duet during Nola Eras Tour | Taylor Swift

One of the most highly anticipated moments of Taylor Swift’s concerts during The Eras Tour is the “surprise song” acoustic segment. It comes late in the show, between segments devoted to “The Tortured Poets Department” and “Midnights,” the final chapter.

Swift often brings along special guests to help sing the surprise songs. There were no guests with her on Friday, October 25, the first of three nights of the Eras Tour at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans.

But on Saturday she caused a big surprise.

“I think I’m going to do something completely different tonight,” she said at the start of the acoustic segment. “I’m going to sing a song that doesn’t belong to me, but to someone I really love. So I want to see how loud you can sing the song.

“It’s in my head. It would make me feel good if I knew that 65,000 other people had this song in their heads just like me.”

With that, she began singing “Espresso” by Sabrina Carpenter, one of her former opening acts who is now headlining the arena.

“I love my girlfriend and I am so proud of Sabrina,” she said. “She started the Eras Tour earlier this year. This year she really took off. You can’t get tickets for her tour. The album is consistently at number 1. I know she would love to know. ” how loud you just sang that song. Is it okay if I call her?’

She grabbed her cell phone, called Carpenter – who is currently headlining her own Short n’ Sweet Tour – and held the phone up to the microphone.

“Any chance you can get off the roller coaster you’re on and put on some clothes and then come out and sing with me?” asked Swift. “How long would that take?”

Carpenter replied, “It would take me five seconds.”

With that, she rose from underneath the stage in a short white babydoll dress as the arena erupted in screams.

With Swift strumming an acoustic guitar, they came together for “Espresso.”

“Can I do it?” asked Swift.

“You can do it,” Timmerman replied.

“Oh my God, I’m about to do it,” Swift said, before uttering the infamous Carpenter line: “I work late because I’m a singer.”

They mixed “Espresso” with Carpenter’s “Please, Please, Please” and the Swift “1989”-era deep cut “Is It Over Now?” as fans shouted the lyrics from their seats.

After their “Espresso” mash-up, Carpenter strode offstage and disappeared.

Carpenter had her own show in Tampa on Friday and will perform at the Toyota Center in Houston on Sunday.

“She literally has one day off,” Swift said. “She’s on tour. It’s crazy that she came to perform for us.”

She added, “Nice Saturday night so far, huh?”

Things got even more fun when Swift sat down at the piano and mixed “Hits Different,” a bonus track from “Midnights,” with “Welcome to New York,” from 1989 (Taylor’s Version).”

The rest of the show featured the same songs from “Midnights” that typically close out the Eras Tour.

Surprise songs on Friday evening

On Friday, the first of Swift’s three sold-out nights at New Orleans’ Caesars Superdome, she took to her debut album for “Our Song,” which she paired with “Call It What You Want” from “Reputation,” in the acoustic guitar mash-up up.

A piano mash-up of ‘The Black Dog’ from ‘Tortured Poets Department’ and ‘Haunted’ from 2010’s ‘Speak Now’ followed.

The previous weekend in Miami, Florence Welch of Florence + the Machine made a surprise appearance with Swift to perform “Florida!!!” to sing, having previously appeared in the recorded version.
