Tales Of The Borderlands Convinced Gearbox A Movie It Could Work

The following Border areas movie might not have happened if it wasn’t for the spin-off story game Stories from the border areaswhich gave Gearbox confidence that the universe could be more than just a playground for looter shooters.

Developed by Telltale Games and released in 2014, Stories from the border areas was a different game than all previously released Border areas titlesIt wasn’t a looter shooter focused on co-op FPS action, but instead – like Telltale’s other games – it was a slower-paced, story-focused point-and-click adventure game with new and old Border areas characters. It was a huge success with not only Border areas fans, but also critics and non-fans. And this, according to Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchfordhelped give the team the confidence that a Border areas movie might work.

In a new interview with PolygonPitchford said the Telltale spinoff was an “experiment.”

“Stories from the border areas didn’t have…it wasn’t the gameplay of the mainline Border areas games,” Pitchford said. “It was a medium for storytelling, just interactive, and it was hugely successful. It was the highest-rated game series that Telltale had ever made. And they were working on, you know, The living Dead And Batman; many more great things.”

Pitchford explained that this reaction is the Border areas universe, adding that after Stories launched, “the characters and the storylines (of Border areas) were meaningful and resonated. So that was the other kind of thing that made me confident.”

The Gearbox CEO added that with Stories from the border areas, The studio ditched all the shooter mechanics and looter gameplay and focused solely on storytelling. Ultimately, the studio said, “It was very, very rewarding.”

While Pitchford agreed that people who ‘found’ Stories loved it, he thinks a film could reach a “wider audience”.

“For me that was the reason (a Border areas movie) is worth existing,” Pitchford said Polygon.

“Like, my mom loves me and is proud of me, but she doesn’t play my video games, the way they’re designed, you know,” Pitchford said. “Not because she doesn’t love me. She just likes other things. I think all gamers have people in their lives who are like that. The movie helps.”

The Border areas movie, which doesn’t look greatwill be released in theaters on August 9th. Hopefully this one is better than any trailer released so far.
