T20 World Cup 2024: Rashid Khan punished by ICC for ugly incident in win that knocked Australia out

Afghan captain Rashid Khan has gotten into trouble with the International Cricket Council (ICC) after disagreeing with a teammate during his team’s match. T20 World Cup win over Bangladesh. In the final over of Afghanistan’s innings in Monday’s crunch match at St Vincent, the 25-year-old’s frustrations got the better of him when all-rounder Karim Janat sent him back to his crease.

As Janat denied a second run, Khan threw his bat in frustration at his batting partner. His bat fortunately fell well below the crease, where he was standing before the spinner regained his composure and continued.

Rashid finished with an instrumental score of 19 runs from 10 balls to help Afghanistan reach the semi-finals of the competition for the first time with an eight-run win over Bangladesh under the Duckworth Lewis System (DLS). However, after the match, the ICC reprimanded Khan for his actions. The Afghanistan spinner admitted the offence and accepted the sanction, meaning there will be no formal hearing.

Afghanistan’s T20 World Cup campaign came to an abrupt end on Thursday when they were thrashed by South Africa. The speedy Proteas caused chaos during the first semi-final at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba.

After Khan won the toss and elected to bat first, Afghanistan slumped to 6-28 in the seventh over as Marco Jansen and Kagiso Rabada demolished the top order. Things didn’t get much better from there as the Afghans were beaten for 56 in just 11.5 overs, the lowest team total in a men’s T20 World Cup final and the country’s lowest ever score in T20 cricket.

South Africa then went about their business with the bat to keep their unbeaten record intact in the tournament. The Proteas needed just under 9 overs to surpass Afghanistan’s total. They will now face the winner of India and England in the final.

While Afghanistan’s victory over Bangladesh secured a historic semi-final spot, the actions of coach Jonathan Trott and Gulbadin Naib did not go down well. With their passage to the T20 World Cup semi-finals at stake and wet weather looming, Trott shockingly gave his players the signal to waste time, having just taken a two-run lead under the DLS system, hoping the rain would become too heavy before another ball could be bowled.

Immediately afterwards, Naib, who was standing at first slip, inexplicably fell backwards, holding his hamstring, and claimed that he had suffered a serious injury. If play could not continue, Afghanistan would be ahead of Australia. When he was in fact carried off, the umpires called for play to be stopped because the rain had started to fall too heavily. But the attempt to continue by faking an injury was not well received, with even Khan being seen berating his player for the unforgivable act.

But the rain held off and play continued, meaning the outcome was not decided by Afghanistan’s questionable actions. They eventually won one of the most exciting cricket matches in recent history by eight runs. Bangladesh were bowled out for 105 after 17.5 overs.
