T-Birds Announces Promotions and Hiring for Hockey Operations Staff

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Springfield Thunderbirds have announced several promotions and appointments within the team’s hockey operations department.

First, the club announced that Steve Passineau, previously Head Equipment Manager of the Thunderbirds, has accepted a promotion to join the St. Louis Blues as Assistant Equipment Manager.

Additionally, former Thunderbirds strength and conditioning coach Abe Edson will join the NHL’s Minnesota Wild as an assistant strength and conditioning coach.

Casey Barile has been promoted to Head Equipment Manager for the Thunderbirds after serving as an assistant for the past three seasons. Barile is a graduate of Kent State University and is originally from St. Louis, MO. He previously served in the ECHL with the Orlando Solar Bears as Assistant Equipment Manager during the 2020-21 season.

The Thunderbirds also welcome two new members to the hockey operations staff for the 2024-25 season. Phil Currier joins the organization as Strength and Conditioning Coach. Currier is a native of Haverhill, NH and last season served as the Director of Hockey Performance at the University of Vermont. Previous experience also includes stints at the University of Maine and his alma mater, Plymouth State University, where he graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise and Sport Physiology and a Master’s Degree in Applied Exercise Physiology & Human Performance.

Finally, Steven Smith will join the Thunderbirds as Assistant Equipment Manager. The McAllen, Texas native served as Head Equipment Manager for the Youngstown Phantoms of the United States Hockey League from 2022-2024, where he was a member of Youngstown’s 2023 Clark Cup championship team. He has held the same role with six organizations, including the Wichita Thunder of the ECHL and the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees, Amarillo Bulls, Jamestown Rebels and New Jersey Titans of the North American Hockey League.
