Sylvan Lake Buccaneers head to provincial competition after league win

The U17 Sylvan Lake Buccaneers are champions of the Central Alberta Lacrosse League.

After winning gold in the league play-offs, the team has qualified for the provincial competitions, which will be held in Sylvan Lake and Red Deer from July 12-14.

For the team’s players, the play-off victory was an exciting event.

“We were the underdogs and fourth place going into the play-offs, and it was a great experience to come out on top and beat the team in the league that was undefeated,” said Cole Marshall.

For Ryan Gammie, returning to the provincial competition means even more this year, as it will be played at home.

“Last year we were second in all of Alberta, this year we want to be first in all of Alberta,” Gammie said.

Just reaching the Provincial Championships is a big achievement, he added.

“It shows the work, the struggle and the effort we have put in to get where we are today. It is a huge honor that shows how much we have dedicated to this game.”

This year the community has been very supportive of the team, both players said.

“The community supported us with bottle/battery drives and more,” Marshall said.

“The community has made a significant contribution this year by recruiting sponsors who have created countless positive changes,” Gammie added.

During the provincial competitions, the Buccaneers compete with five other teams to possibly win the provincial title.
