Sweden v England LIVE: Team news and line-ups as Lionesses qualify for Euro 2025

England not playing for a draw against Sweden – Wiegman

England are back in action tonight as they take on Sweden in the final qualifier for Euro 2025. After a 2-1 win over Ireland last Friday, the Lionesses know that a draw or better will be enough to secure a place at next summer’s tournament in Switzerland.

Sarina Wiegman’s team are the reigning European champions and will be looking to defend their title strongly. However, they have not been good enough since losing the 2023 World Cup final and have not met the extremely high standards they set themselves during this qualifying campaign.

An opening 1-1 draw against Sweden put them on the back foot and a loss to France at St James’ Park left them no room for error. Since then, England have beaten France away and secured a win over Ireland to give them the lead heading into this crucial match.

Sweden are now behind them in Group A3, but a win at home tonight would put them level with The Lionesses and a better head-to-head record would secure them a place in the play-offs.

Mary Earps or Hannah Hampton?

One of the biggest decisions for Sarina Wiegman tonight is who she chooses as goalkeeper. Mary Earps has missed the last two games with a hip injury but is fit to start, while Hannah Hampton proved herself between the posts against both France and Ireland.

Asked about the goalkeepers, Wiegman said: “There is a lot of competition in the goalkeeper group, but also in the team. A decision has to be made for tomorrow and then we won’t see each other for three months, so players play for their clubs and then we’ll see.”

Lionesses triumph over Ireland to move within one point of Euro 2025

England moved a step closer to a place at Euro 2025 with a 2-1 win over Ireland in a qualifier at Carrow Road.

Alessia Russo put the reigning European champions ahead after just five minutes in front of a sell-out crowd in Norwich. Undeterred by the wet conditions, she was delighted to welcome the Lionesses back for the first time since the 2022 Arnold Clark Cup.

Georgia Stanway doubled England’s lead with a second-half penalty, but Julie-Ann Russell prevented the home side from keeping a clean sheet in the fourth and final minute of injury time.

‘Very important’ to secure automatic qualification, says Williamson

England captain Leah Williamson explained that it is “really important” for the Lionesses to automatically qualify for Euro 2025 and avoid the play-offs.

The Lionesses need just one point to automatically qualify when they face Sweden on Tuesday night. If Sweden wins on Tuesday, the Lionesses will finish third in their group and will enter this year’s play-offs.

“We are obviously the reigning champions so we want to be the first to get to the tournament,” Williamson said.

“If you secure your qualification, you have a year to prepare and know where you want to be. The later you wait, the more it can detract from your preparation.

“It is very important to us and that is why we are fully focused on it.”

Williamson on ‘sloppy’ defending against Ireland

Friday night’s win over Ireland was a virtual draw for England, who took a controlled 2-0 lead before conceding a goal late in the game.

It was the fifth goal they conceded in five games and captain Leah Williamson said the 2-1 scoreline sounded “a lot closer” than it needed to be.

“When you haven’t scored that many – in all the games we’ve played we’ve had the opportunity to score more – it makes those moments a little bit nerve-wracking,” she said.

“That’s when sloppiness or stressful situations can occur. I don’t think it’s a lack of concentration or effort on our part. It’s just how the games have gone.

“We could have ended the games much earlier and Friday was another example of that. Whether that will stop us from conceding goals, who knows?”

Sarina Wiegman on previous draw with Sweden

The England manager spoke at yesterday’s pre-match press conference about the match at Wembley, in which both teams drew 1-1.

She said: “I think we definitely want to do better than we did at Wembley. We could have done better than we did and we’ve been working on that and I hope we will do better.

“They are a good team. A very structured team. Powerful with a lot of experience. They can play directly and get behind the defense. We know that and we have prepared ourselves. They have to win, but that is also what we want.”

Sweden v England prediction

Sweden take confidence from their 1-1 draw against England, which both teams played earlier in qualifying, but Sarina Wiegman’s team appear to be back in form.

They were dominant against the Republic of Ireland but lacked a ruthlessness in front of goal which could hurt them against a decent Swedish team. This will be a close contest but England should have enough quality to come out on top.

England XI: Hampton, Bronze, Williamson, Bright, Carter; Walsh, Stanway; Hemp, Park, Mead; Russo.

Sweden v England

That win moves them above Sweden in Group A3 and gives them a three-point lead heading into this final qualifier. Should the Lionesses lose, they will have to go through a series of play-offs to reach the tournament in Switzerland and have a chance to defend their title.

Sweden, who drew with England in their first qualifier, need a win in turn. They lost 2-1 to France last time out, meaning their promising campaign risks ending on a sour note.
