Suspect in fatal Commerce City collision charged with murder

A man arrested in connection with a fatal crash in Commerce City that killed one person and sent three others to the hospital has been charged with murder and vehicular assault, according to court records.

Erik Hernandez-Escobar, 20, was charged Tuesday with vehicular homicide, vehicular assault, false reporting of identifying information to law enforcement and two counts of leaving the scene of a fatal accident — all felonies — court records show.

The 20-year-old also faces three traffic tickets: speeding citation, driving without insurance and failure to stop at a stop sign.

Police said Hernandez-Escobar was the driver of the Audi SUV that struck a family of four in their car near the intersection of Holly Street and East 58th Avenue on Sunday, October 6, around 8:30 p.m.

One person — an 18-year-old man — was killed in the crash that also injured his parents and another teenage passenger, police said. None of the victims have been identified by police.

Hernandez-Escobar and his passengers immediately got out, jumped into another nearby car and fled the scene, police said.
