Suryakumar Yadav Captain, No Jasprit Bumrah: India announce squad for T20I series against Sri Lanka

BCCI has announced India’s squad for the T20I series against Sri Lanka, starting on July 27. This will be Gautam Gambhir’s first series as the head coach of the Indian team. Suryakumar Yadav has been officially named captain over Hardik Pandya and is likely to lead the squad in the 2026 T20 World Cup as well.

The end of July will herald a new era of Indian cricket, Gautam Gambhir is set to begin his first assignment as head coach of the Men in Blue. India travel to Sri Lanka to play the island nation’s men. They will first face Sri Lanka in a three-match T20I series and the BCCI has announced the squad. This will be an important series as Gambhir looks to pick the next crop of players for the 2026 T20 World Cup after the retirement of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja from the short format. Gambhir has also found his captain in the form of Suryakumar Yadav.

It was Hardik Pandya who was the favourite to become captain after Rohit Sharma’s retirement from T20Is. However, Gambhir made a big decision to make Suryakumar Yadav captain due to Pandya’s returning fitness and injury problems. He is likely to become India’s permanent T20I captain and even lead the team in the 2026 T20 World Cup.
