Superstar Adele stops concert to praise Australian breakdancer Raygun

British singing superstar Adele paused mid-performance during a concert in Munich last weekend to praise Australian breakdancer Raygun for her performance, saying it was her “favourite” Olympic moment.

Australian breakdancer Rachael Gunn, better known as Raygun, went viral after receiving a zero for her routine at the first women’s breakdancing competition in Paris.

The 36-year-old university lecturer has since been the target of fierce criticism and cruel jokes, prompting Adele to cancel her performance in Germany to show her support.

During her third concert in Munich on Saturday (local time), the Hello singer asked the audience if they had seen the performance. She indicated that it had been an important topic of conversation between her and her friends.

“I don’t know if it was a joke, but either way, it made me very, very happy. We laughed non-stop for almost 24 hours,” she told the audience.

She urged the audience to seek out Raygun’s performance, calling it “so funny” and her “favorite thing that’s ever happened at the Olympics.”

Raygun has responded to the online reactions and has therefore remained in the background. He has, however, discussed the situation on social media.

She explained her approach this way: “I wanted to do something new and creative, because how many opportunities do you get to do that on an international stage?

“I was always the underdog and wanted to make my mark in a different way.”

Despite the negative feedback, some have defended Raygun. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese praised her efforts, saying: “Raygun had a crack, well done. She represented our country and that’s a good thing.”

She lost all three of her round-robin bouts by a combined score of 54-0 and surprised the crowd with her ‘kangaroo dance’ as a nod to Australia.

In response to the negative reactions, the head judge of the groundbreaking competition said that Gunn simply wanted to be original.

And the federation in question said it had offered mental health care in response to online criticism.

“Breaking is all about originality, bringing something new and representing your country or region,” said head judge Martin Gilian, better known as MGbility, during a press conference.

“That’s exactly what Raygun did. She was inspired by her surroundings, which in this case was a kangaroo, for example.”

The break and hip-hop communities “are absolutely behind her,” he added.

“We use five criteria in the competitive judging system and her level may not have been as high as the other participants,” MGbility said.

“But again, that doesn’t mean she did really bad. She did her best. She won the Oceania qualifier. Unfortunately for her, the other b-girls were better.”

Breaking, also known to many as breakdancing, a term the artists hate, is not on the program of the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028. The next Summer Games will be held in Brisbane, Australia.

“We believe that this has nothing to do with our chances for Brisbane 2032,” Nifontov said when asked about the criticism of Raygun and his return to the Olympics.
