Super League: London Broncos 12-32 Leigh Leopards

Leigh Leopards avoided a surprise defeat at the hands of bottom side London Broncos to remain in the race for the Super League play-offs.

The Broncos scored first in a gutsy performance, with Sam Davis helped by Oliver Leyland’s winding run, before Leigh hit back through tries from Darnell McIntosh and Frankie Halton.

Ricky Leutele scored the third goal, but a wrong kick by Zak Hardaker meant the home team were still in the game at half-time.

Josh Rourke then levelled the scores until three tries in the final quarter from Kai O’Donnell, Gareth O’Brien and Aaron Pene saw Leigh break away to take victory despite a flawless performance at Wimbledon.

The 20-point lead was a huge compliment to Leigh, who struggled to play smoothly and had many attacking sets to his name until the final stages when London began to tire.

The home side deserved to be level after an hour, after a physical performance that threatened their final spot in the Super League.

The Leopards scored three of their six tries in the final quarter, with Pene’s first try for the club – a somewhat scrappy but effective score – typical of the visitors’ performance.

Adrian Lam’s side have now won three games in a row and are now seventh, just one point behind Catalans Dragons and St Helens, who are both in the play-offs.

The Broncos are still bottom but level on points with fellow struggling Hull FC.
