Sunday with Jill Scott: ‘I don’t like to sit still for too long’ | Sunday with…

Sundays as a child? As a kid I was always muddy, either after 90 minutes of soccer or a cross-country race. It ended with my mom saying, “Take your shin guards and boots off at the door.” She would run a hot bath. The water was always so muddy that I needed another one.

What’s a Sunday must? Walking the dog and, if possible, eating out on a Sunday – it always tastes better when someone else has cooked. I live between Manchester and Liverpool so there are lots of options. It doesn’t have to be fancy, just a local pub. We usually have to chase Winnie, our bulldog, out of the house with a bag of treats. She’ll probably come back bigger than when she started.

Sunday TV? I’m not really a TV person; I don’t like to sit still for too long. That’s probably because I’m such an active kid. It’s something I have to think about more since I retired. Movies I like best: Anything with a twist that makes my brain think. I’ve recently enjoyed Where the crayfish sing.

Do you play sports? When I played football, Sunday was the most important day. At 37, you don’t go to the local field to kick a ball around. Maybe I could, but I’m stiffer now, because I’ve put a lot of miles through my knees. I wouldn’t change it for the world. Nowadays, I might go cycling or running.

Do you miss Sunday football? Definitely the competitiveness. I liked that challenge: are you going to win or lose? I really should play a game of Monopoly to keep that competitiveness going.

Monday preparation? When I played, Sunday was the most important day. Now I see it as a reset day for a busy week. They say: do something today that will make tomorrow easier. I think I should listen to that more. I’m going to Germany for a week tomorrow. Have I packed my bag yet?
