Story behind the viral ‘hammer attack’ on a Scottish island revealed on Google Maps

An academic has explained how he staged a Google Street View ‘masterpiece’ in which he attacks his colleague with a hammer.

Gideon Futerman was visiting the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides over the summer when he saw Google’s 360-degree camera approaching in the car.

He and his friend soon came up with the idea of staging an altercation with a geological hammer that would be captured on Google Street View.

The camera captured the moment Mr Futerman’s friend appears to swing the hammer at him.

“This summer I went on a field trip to the far north of the Isle of Lewis with a good friend of mine to map the geology there,” he wrote on X.

“The Google Street View car drove by. We had a geological hammer.

“The next masterpiece, now on Google Street View, was the result.

“I know I mainly post serious things here, but this was just too funny not to share.”
