Steve Martin responds to Meryl Streep and Martin Short’s dating rumors

Steve Martin weighed in on the recent rumors that Meryl Streep and Martin Short are dating with a hilariously cryptic message.

The “Father of the Bride” actor took to Instagram on Friday to discuss his “Only Murders in the Building” co-stars’ close relationship when he shared a photo with all three stars from a Glamor article.

However, Martin’s face was covered with a large, red banned emoji, seemingly indicating he was a third wheel.

The comedian, 79, did not add a caption to the post, although many fans took the opportunity to celebrate the potential new couple in the comments.

“I don’t know why the thought of Meryl and Martin makes me so happy, but it honestly fills my heart with joy,” one person wrote, while another noted that they have “never been so invested in celebrity rumors.”

“I absolutely love Meryl and Martin as a couple, even though they are friends, they both just shine✨,” someone else commented.

Martin’s post comes shortly after Short, 74, and Streep, 75, were spotted smiling as they stepped out together for a cozy dinner at Giorgio Baldi in Santa Monica, California, earlier this week.

Rumors that the pair, who play on-screen love interests in the Hulu series, were an item that started after they were spotted close at the 2024 Golden Globes.

A rep for Short quickly shut down speculation about a romantic relationship between the two, telling People at the time that they were “nothing more” than friends.

Since then, however, the actors have enjoyed each other’s company several times: going to dinner parties together and attending Broadway plays.

In August, the Oscar-winning actress was seen holding hands with Short at the season 4 premiere of their Hulu show.

Insiders told Page Six that Streep and Short stayed close while in the theater, putting their “close friendship” on full display.

“They were walking hand in hand and were cheerful and laughing. It was very sweet and cute,” we were told. “It has to be more than a ‘showmance’. There’s definitely something in it.”
