Stephen Curry says becoming an NBA owner is ‘definitely a possibility’

Michael Jordan set the bar for NBA players who became owners when he purchased the Charlotte Hornets. Grant Hill (Hawks), Shaquille O’Neal (Kings), Dwyane Wade (Jazz) and Magic Johnson (Lakers) have served as minority NBA owners. LeBron James has made it clear that he wants to be part of the ownership group if (or more accurately, when) an NBA expansion franchise is announced in Las Vegas.

Stephen Curry wants to join the club, he said on the CNBC program “Squawk on the Street.”

“For me, that’s definitely an option. I think I could do a pretty good job of helping to preserve how great the NBA is right now and what it takes to run a championship organization…

“I know I have a lot more to achieve on the pitch before I can take on other roles in the league.”

Curry recently agreed to a one-year, $62.6 million extension This gives him another three years with the Warriors, until he is 39 years old.

It’s easy to imagine Curry or LeBron in the roles that Hill had in Atlanta and Magic had with the Lakers, not as primary owners — they’re rich but not “buy an NBA team all the way” rich — but as minority owners and the face of the franchise. LeBron James, for example, is now a billionaire (according to Forbes ), but the expansion fee for new NBA teams is expected to approach $6 billion, which is just the buy-in and doesn’t include all the costs of building a team.

Before we see Curry the owner, we get a few more years of Curry the player, and that’s good news for fans everywhere.
