STEP up: Estevan police tackle traffic violations in province-wide security operation – DiscoverEstevan.com

The Estevan Police Department hosted a one-day Selective Traffic Enforcement Project (STEP) on June 26 in collaboration with other law enforcement agencies in the province.

The focus of STEP was to improve road safety, address perceived traffic violations and identify vehicle deficiencies under the Saskatchewan Vehicle Equipment Regulations Act.

These were the following results of the program:

  • 171 vehicles were guided to the project site.
  • Under the Road Safety Act, 28 fines were issued for:

    • Using a mobile phone while driving.
    • Not wearing a seat belt.
    • Intersection-related violations.
    • Failure to comply with vehicle equipment regulations.

  • 79 written warnings were issued for various violations of the Vehicle Equipment Regulations.
  • 15 vehicle inspection certificates were issued.
  • 66 mandatory alcohol tests were carried out, all of which passed.
  • Two 72-hour driving bans and one 21-day driving ban were imposed in connection with cannabis use.
  • Three seizures due to cannabis use.
  • Three car seats were provided to vehicle drivers with children in outdated seats.

In a press release, EPS expressed its thanks to the other services that continue to prioritize road safety. Other groups working on the project included the Weyburn Police Service, Saskatchewan Highway Patrol and SGI Traffic Safety Community Outreach.
