State Security Service detains Latvian citizen for glorifying terrorism and Putin

On the 25th of September this year, the State Security Service (VDD) detained a Latvian citizen on suspicion of public glorification and justification of terrorism, as the service announced.

VDD performed a search in the person’s home, confiscating several data storage devices and notes in the process.

When monitoring the information space, the VDD found out that the person posted on Twitter several posts expressing support for the ideology proclaimed by terrorist organizations, which justifies violence.

The person praised the al-Qaeda terrorist group and Russian President Vladimir Putin in those posts.

The suspect was arrested. The VDD did not comment on whether the detainee needed to undergo a forensic psychiatric and psychological expertise.

LETA is aware that the detainee was previously featured in the criminal proceedings for hooliganism initiated in 2019, but the case was closed by law enforcement in 2021. The content of the man’s X (formerly Twitter) profile shows that he publicly shared his opinions against women’s leather jackets and posted a photo of pornographic content.
