Stars who can’t stand Steven Seagal

It would take a lot, it seems, to get on the bad side of the eminently likable, hilarious, and talented Bob Odenkirk, who seems like the kind of guy just about anyone would want to have a beer with, even if they don’t. like beer. Steven Seagal managed it, though, and he did it via that fateful 1991 “Saturday Night Live” hosting gig that may be the most egregious mismatch between variety show and host ever conceived. Odenkirk was a writer for “SNL” at the time, and speaking to Howard Stern in 2022, he was still, three decades later, as confused as anyone by the level of humorlessness and ignorance Seagal displayed that night.

“His attitude all week was … he kept saying, ‘I’ve never seen your show. I don’t know what you’re doing here,'” Odenkirk recalled. “Really? You’ve never seen ‘Saturday Night Live?'” He went on to describe a sketch written by Seagal, the last of the night, in which the star burst into an Exxon board meeting to beat up everyone present before angrily shouting, “This is what happens when you pollute the planet!” The audience, Odenkirk continued, was “flabbergasted,” and when Stern asked how on earth “SNL” producer Lorne Michaels could have let this fiasco happen, Odenkirk simply said that by the time the train derailed during the week-long rehearsals, it was too late.
