St. Louis City’s Bradley Carnell is the latest coaching career casualty

St. Louis City’s Bradley Carnell is the fourth MLS head coach to be fired in the past four weeks.

In St. Louis City’s first season, the South African led the team to the 2023 Western Conference regular-season championship with a 17-12-3 mark, becoming the first expansion team to win a conference regular-season title with 17 wins (after the shootout period).

But in 2024, the team has dropped to 12th place with a record of 3-7-10.

• Interim coach: Technical director John Hackworth, who previously served as head coach at MLS in Philadelphia, will lead the team on an interim basis.

• What they say: “Given Bradley’s many contributions to the club, this was not an easy decision,” said CITY SC Sporting Director Lutz Pfannenstiel. “Unfortunately, based on our results in Year 2 to date, we believe a change of manager is in the best interest of the club as we regroup and look to improve our performance and results.”

MLS coaching changes for 2024:
St. Louis City OUT: Bradley Carnell (July 1): Interim coach: John Hackworth.
San Jose AWAY: Luchi Gonzalez (June 24). Interim coach: Ian Russell.
FC Dallas OUT: Nico Estevez (June 9). Interim coach: Peter Luccin.
Atlanta United OUT: Gonzalo Pineda (June 3). Interim coach: Rob Valentino.
Nashville SC OUT: Gary Smith (May 16). Interim coach: Rumba Munthali.
