Spending on women’s transfer period increases by 125%

A record £5.18m was spent on transfers in women’s football this summer, more than double the amount spent in 2023.

There were more than 1,100 transfers in the professional leagues, representing a 30% increase compared to the previous 12 months.

A FIFA study found that £5.18 million ($6.8 million) was spent between June 1 and September 2, 2024, a 125% increase on the previous record of £2.3 million ($3.02 million) set in 2023.

Women’s Super League (WSL) clubs spent more than any other league in the world, with £1.78m ($2.33m) in revenue. Around £760,000 was recouped from player sales by WSL clubs.

Liverpool broke a club record in June by signing Canadian teenager Olivia Smith from Sporting Lisbon for £210,000.

Men’s football saw global spending of £4.92 billion ($6.46 billion) – the second highest amount in history, but down 13% from 2023.

A record 11,000 transfers have been registered so far, including ongoing deals.

English clubs spent more money than any other league in the world, with £1.29 billion ($1.69 billion) spent on signing players.

Julian Alvarez’s £81.5m transfer from Manchester City to Atletico Madrid is the highest amount spent on a single player, while Dominic Solanke’s £55m transfer from Tottenham was the highest amount spent on a single player by an English club.
