Southampton seal deal worth up to £25m for Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale

Southampton have reportedly agreed a deal worth up to £25million with Arsenal for goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.

The Gunners attempted to find a solution for Ramsdale this summer after the England international lost his place to David Raya last season.

The 26-year-old has been the target of Wolves, who have made him a loan offer, while Dutch giants Ajax are also said to be interested, but it appears Ramsdale now has a new home.

Southampton agree Ramsdale transfer

Sky Sports reporter Lyall Thomas reported that Southampton have agreed a deal with the Gunners worth an initial £18m, which could rise to £25m with add-ons.

Thomas adds that other aspects of the deal are still being negotiated, but that it appears likely to happen.

Signing someone of Ramsdale’s calibre would be a huge step forward for Southampton on their return to the Premier League and the goalkeeper could make all the difference for the club.

The Saints lost both opening games 1-0 and will have to do everything they can to stay in the competition this season.

The move offers Ramsdale the chance to get his career back on track and play regular football, hoping to increase his chances for England.

After two seasons as Arsenal’s first-choice goalkeeper, Ramsdale was replaced by Raya last season and has made just six Premier League appearances and 11 in all competitions.

The Englishman made 89 appearances for the Gunners during his time at the Emirates, following a surprise move from Sheffield United.

It is currently unclear whether there is a relegation clause in Ramsdale’s contract that would give him the right to leave if the Saints are relegated, but it is hard to imagine that there would not be a relegation clause.

It is a relief for Ramsdale that his future has been sorted and he can now concentrate on his football and do his best to keep Southampton at the top.
