Sources – Utah QB Cam Rising game-time call vs. Oklahoma State

According to sources told ESPN, Utah quarterback Cam Rising is having to make a last-minute decision on whether to start due to a throwing hand injury. He is expected to try to start.

No. 12 Utah plays No. 14 Oklahoma State on Saturday in one of the biggest games of the Big 12 season.

Rising has been limited in practice this week due to the injury, and he is not expected to be at 100 percent when he does play. He will be closely monitored to see how his injured fingers affect how he throws the ball. The fingers play a large role in both spin and speed, which will affect his effectiveness in the passing game.

Rising warmed up with a glove on his hand prior to Saturday’s game against Utah State and was spotted with two fingers wrapped on the sideline for Saturday’s game against Baylor. It is uncertain whether he will use the glove on Saturday. Utah’s offense plays the majority of its snaps under center and uses snaps as a mechanism in its snapping operation, both of which would put stress on the fingers.

Utah backup quarterback Isaac Wilson is a true freshman who made his first start against Utah State. He participated in first-team practice this week when Rising was out. Wilson completed 20 of 33 passes for 239 yards and three touchdowns.

Wilson is the younger brother of former BYU star quarterback Zach Wilson.

Rising is a seventh-year senior who emerged as one of the Pac-12’s top quarterbacks in 2021 and 2022. He has been plagued by injuries in recent seasons, with an injury in the Rose Bowl after the 2022 season ultimately causing him to miss the entire 2023 season.

Rising injured his hand in a freak accident in the second quarter against Baylor. He threw a ball away, was pushed out of bounds and landed awkwardly on the water coolers on the Baylor sideline.

He dressed for the game against Utah State and warmed up with the glove.
