“Sometimes I don’t know why I attack” – Tadej Pogacar just can’t help himself in the 2024 Tour de France

Tadej Pogacar simply couldn’t hold back on stage 17 of the 2024 Tour de France. While the GC group seemed content to roll in and save their legs for another day, the Maillot Jaune surprised everyone with a brutal attack on the penultimate climb.

Although Jonas Vingegaard and Remco Evenepoel eventually managed to catch up with the leader of UAE Team Emirates, with the latter even taking a 10-second lead at the finish, Pogacar refuses to simply defend his lead of more than three minutes in the general classification, as the number of remaining stages is getting smaller and smaller.

“There’s one more day to go, and it was a really good one,” the Maillot Jaune reflected in his post-stage interview. “It was a really fast stage – and it felt like a 120km junior race! It turned out to be a really tough day, one of those days where you put a lot of energy in. Team Visma | Lease a Bike rode a great race today, because they were really aggressive. I don’t really know if they wanted to get me in trouble or to stress us out.”

With his attack and the seemingly out-of-nowhere nature of the move, it seems that even Pogacar was caught a bit by surprise. “Sometimes I don’t know why I attack – even I don’t know anymore!” Pogacar laughs out loud. “I think I just enjoyed the climb because it was steep and super fun, and I felt like attacking to test my legs in this third week and see if I could get a gap or something. In the end it was Remco who made a super good attack and ran away. Without the Visma guys he would have put even more time on Jonas and me,” concludes UAE Team Emirates who managed to gain another two seconds for their efforts on nearest challenger Vingegaard.
