Solheim Cup: A quick look at Team USA’s standings ahead of the final major

Welcome to the daily ritual of Playing Through: Golf Talk Today.

Each day the crew discusses different aspects of the PGA Tour, LPGA, LIV Golf and more.

Today we look at the Team USA Solheim Cup points standings for the Solheim Cup September 13-15 at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainsville, Virginia.

This week the ladies are at the AIG Women’s Open, the last major championship for the LPGA. It’s a perfect time to see where everyone stands.

When we last checked the standings, Nelly Korda and Lilia Vu were the only two to secure their spots, but now five women have done so. Ally Ewing, Allisen Corpuz and Lauren Coughlin join Korda and Vu on Team USA.

Coughlin won her second LPGA event of the year at the ISPS Handa Women’s Scottish Open in Ayrshire, Scotland. She also finished third at the Chevron Championship and solo fourth at the Amundi Evian Championship.

It was a big year for the 31-year-old as she is currently one of the best players on Tour.

Let’s take a look at the regular squad and who is behind them in the rankings.

TEAM VS

— Nelly Korda
—Lilia Vu
— Lauren Coughlin
— Ally Ewing
— Allisen Corpuz

Team USA Solheim Cup Standings:

6. Megan Khang
7.Andrea Lee
8. Rose Zhang
9. Alison Lee
10. Sarah Schmelzel
11. Jennifer Kupcho
12. Angel Yin
13. Cheyenne Knight
14. Lexi Thompson
15. Marina-Alex

The top seven players on the Solheim Cup points list qualify automatically. The top two players on the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings who have not already qualified are selected.

There will also be three captains chosen by Stacy Lewis.

Rose Zhang and Alison Lee are the top two players in the World Golf Rankings.

Megan Khang and Andrea Lee are currently ranked No. 6 and No. 7 on the points list. This week at the AIG Women’s Open is going to be huge, as Zhang and Alison Lee are not that many points behind.

And that’s without even mentioning Lexi Thompson, who is ranked No. 14, who is very tempting. She has time this week to perform well and score some extra points, but it would be hard to believe that Lewis would leave her off this team.

Coughlin and Corpuz were the last to secure a spot before the qualifying period ends on August 25. Lewis will announce the full Team USA roster on August 27.

The final major of the year is one to keep an eye on as the ladies on the outside will be looking to impress Lewis enough to secure one of those picks.

Who do you think will complete the Solheim Cup for Team USA?
