Sockpop’s possibly spooky gardening game Grunn is coming out next month

Grunn is a self-described “extremely normal gardening game” where you tend to a garden, explore different realities, and try not to die. We’ve been excited to get our hands on the shears for a while, partly thanks to an excellent demo, and partly because it’s from Sokpop Collective member and Bernband developer Tom van den Boogaart.

Now a release date has been announced: October 4th.

“I normally avoid writing sentences that could easily be quoted on a Steam page, but the extraordinarily satisfying sound of Grunn’s garden shears is the exception,” Nic wrote of the Grunn demo. “Feel free to try any of these: Grunn’s shears sound is the Wilhelm scream of garden tools, and will be referenced for decades to come. Grunn’s shears sound wormed its way past my eyes and into parts of my brain I previously thought were only accessible via masterful ASMR or irresponsibly long Q-tips. I used to suffer from anxiety, but now my only fear in life is that Grunn’s grass will run out, leaving me with no reason to click away with his shears.”

If you’ve never played it, Bernband remains a delight. It’s a first-person game about exploring a strange, alien city for no other purpose than tourism, which we celebrated in 2014. Alice O, the best of us all, was particularly taken with it.

Grunn seems to have some of that same energy in his town, full of strange, quiet people going about their lives. The Grunn demo will also remain playable via his Steam page. Come October 4th.
