Sim Lim Tower Ice Uncle Dies – Mothership.SG

Ng Teak Boon, also known as Uncle Ng, the elderly man who sold ice cream outside Sim Lim Tower come rain or shine, has died.

He was believed to have been approximately 92 years old at the time of death.

Melvin Chew, an administrator of the Facebook group Hawkers United – Dabao 2020, announced on June 22, 2024 that Uncle Ng had passed away on the night of June 21.

Chew, who calls Uncle Ng Uncle Boon, said the older man will be cremated on June 22.

Uncle Ng was a semi-permanent fixture outside Sim Lim Tower, earning him the name Sim Lim Tower ice uncle.

Although business was bad, Uncle Ng continued to sell his money, cycling back and forth from his house on Beach Road to Sim Lim Tower in Jalan Besar to sell local ice cream from his modest cart.

His cart was opposite an intersection, and against the busy traffic, Uncle Ng cut a lonely figure in a world that moved faster than he might be used to.

Maybe he can rest for a while now.
