Asian Games bronze medallist shot putter Kiran Baliyan has been provisionally suspended by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) after testing positive for a banned substance, despite the latest list of doping offenders including many more athletes from various sports.

Surprisingly, Olympic medallist Bajrang Punia’s name is missing from the latest update, though he was included in an earlier list recently published by NADA.

The NADA had suspended Punia for the second time on June 23, three weeks after the Anti-Disciplinary Doping Panel (ADDP) revoked his suspension on the grounds that he had not received a “notice of charges” from the national body.

NADA had suspended the Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist on April 23 for refusing to provide his urine sample for a doping test during the qualifying trials in Sonepat on March 10. The sport’s global governing body, United Wrestling World (UWW), had also suspended him.

Bajrang, who along with Vinesh Phogat and Sakshi Malik led a prolonged protest against ousted Wrestling Federation of India president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh over alleged sexual harassment of female wrestlers, had appealed against the interim suspension and the ADDP had revoked it on May 31 till the NADA clears the charges.

Baliyan, 25, who became the second Indian to win a medal in the women’s shot put at the Asian Games in Hangzhou last year, tested positive for metandienone, a banned anabolic androgenic steroid.

She had won gold at the 2023 National Inter-State Championships and silver at the 2024 Federation Cup. She faces a maximum ban of four years if proven guilty.

Also on the list was hammer thrower Manju Bala, who won bronze at the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon. She tested positive for dehydrochloromethyl-testosterone (steroid) and SARMS LGD-4033 (ligandrol).

Shalini Chaudhary, who won silver at this year’s Federation Cup, also tested positive for the steroid metandienone. Long-distance runner Chavi Yadav tested positive for drostanolone, an anabolic androgenic steroid.

Other top Indian athletics athletes, including javelin thrower DP Manu, quarter-mile runner Deepanshi and middle-distance runner Parvej Khan, have served interim suspensions.

In wrestling, Arju, the bronze medalist at the 2023 U20 World Championships, tested positive for stanozolol.

Badminton makes a rare entry with doubles player Krishna Prasad Garaga, a member of the Indian team that won gold at the 2022 Thomas Cup. Garaga tested positive for human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG).

Wushu players T Menaka Devi, Manjinder Singh and Goutam Sharma are on the list as there have been a number of doping cases in the sport in recent times.

Bhupendra Singh Byadwal (pencak silat), Ashish Phugat (rowing) and Ribason Singh Ningthoujam (canoe) are also among those provisionally suspended by the NADA.
